8 million tons of plastic waste ends up in our oceans every year. This interruption of the oceanic ecosystem is endangering many sea life species and risking the health of anyone who eats seafood.
This plastic is collected, cleaned, sorted and processed so it can be reused. This involves a lot of manual work and processing to grind the plastic into flakes. We compact them into a panel and cut the coasters out of them.
Plastic is an incredible invention and was revolutionary in creating new exciting and ergonomic forms – not to mention cheap and affordable products.
Due to the labor-intensive task of creating this material - it is 10 times more expensive than normal plastic – so it is not a commercial alternative. We need to start using other decomposable materials that do not affect the environment. We create these products in order to not only spark conversation (as that isn’t enough) – but more to spark consciousness in consumer behavior when purchasing products – especially with fast pace/single-use items.
Every Coaster is made from gathered plastic from the sea. The colors are unique and patterns will vary from coaster to coaster
