The idea to create products from waste coffee grounds came as a formal response to the city, working out of coffee shops and cafés, and recognizing the potential in repurposing material so unique and in such abundance. The UK sends an estimated 250,000 tonnes of coffee waste to the landfill each year. With less than a quarter of the bean actually used in creating a coffee, after being shipped in from the furthest corners of the globe, it’s an environmental imperative that the country’s coffee waste is recycled and repurposed.
JoyResolve and Smile Plastics have worked tirelessly together since 2016, perfecting the makeup of the material and designing products which complement the material’s unique characteristics. The way we gather spent coffee grounds from the city’s coffee shops and cafés is presented as a commercial buy-back option for these businesses and becomes a circular solution to the problem of coffee waste to companies both local and international.
JoyResolve’scollaboration with Smile Plastic is defined by our desire to change perceptions around waste via aesthetic and environmental innovation. By combining an artistic and technological approach, we seek to unlock the hidden potential in recycling, opening eyes to the unexpected beauty of scrap
